INSSSL to Host Annual Memorial Lecture Series for Lt Gen Denzil Kobbekaduwa
The Institute of National Security Studies Sri Lanka (INSSSL) is hosting an Annual Memorial Lecture Series in honour of Lieutenant General Denzil Lakshman Kobbekaduwa. The inaugural lecture will be delivered by General G H de Silva (Rtd.) RWP VSV USP, on the “Life and Times of Lt. Gen. Kobbekaduwa in the contemporary context”, on 8 December 2017, from 15.00 – 17.00 pm, at its premises - SUHRUPAYA Auditorium (19th Floor).
Lt Gen Kobbekaduwa joined the army in May 1960 and upon graduation from Sandhurst, he received a Queens' Commission and was posted to the 1st Reconnaissance Regiment, Ceylon Armoured Corps. As a military strategist, he led some of the most successful military operations in the early battles of the Eelam wars, such as Vadamarachchi Operation and Operation Balavegaya. However, on 8 August 1992, Lt Gen Kobbekaduwa fell silent as a war hero along with fellow-military veterans.
Thus, we hope to honour the memory and strategic depth of Lt Gen Kobbekaduwa, by hosting an annual series dedicated to military strategic thinking and by mapping Sri Lanka’s strategic trajectory in the future.
The opening remarks will be delivered by the Secretary of Defence Mr. Kapila Waidyaratne, P.C. State Minister for Defence, Hon. Ruwan Wijeywardene, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Commanders, senior military officers, Foreign Ambassadors and Defence Attachés, civilian scholars and academia will also be in attendance.
