Cambridge University invites Professor Asanga Abeyagoonasekera
Prof. Asanga Abeyagoonasekera, Director General of the Institute of National Security Studies of Sri Lanka was invited by Cambridge University on the 2nd September 2019 to present a paper at the Opening Session of the ‘37th Economic Crime Symposium’.
The paper was titled ‘Importance of Meaningful Co-operation in Preventing and Interdicting Economically Motivated Crime and Misconduct: A Sri Lankan Perspective’.
He joins the very few Sri Lankans who have addressed a forum in Cambridge and brought honour to the country.
The presentation was recognised and appreciated by the distinguished audience. The Lord Mayor of City of London Alderman Estlin, John Glen MP and Economic Secretary, Attorney General of England and Wales Rt Hon Mr. Geoffrey Cox PC,QC, MP and Founder and Executive Director Professor Barry Rider along with more than one thousand scholars and practitioners attended the symposium from around the world.
The presentation of the paper was timely, as Sri Lanka is coming out from a terrorist attack which took place entirely due to the relevant agencies being slow to respond and was in a state of inaction.
He highlighted the extremist threat from Middle East to Colombo, the war on drugs and importance of Anti-Money Laundering/ Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) mechanisms and how the bureaucratic inefficiency and corruption in the state sector retards any timely action to take preventive and curative measures.
