Colonel Nalin Herath RSP, the Overlooking Director General and Acting Director of the Institute of National Security Studies (INSS), the premier think tank for national security established and functioning under Ministry of Defence shined at the conference organized by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the Consortium of South Asian Think Tanks (COSATT) in Kathmandu, Nepal, on November 07. COSATT, a collective of leading Think Tanks in South Asia, focuses on researching and studying significant topics and issues in the region to promote regional cooperation and peace.
During his impactful presentation titled "Two Years after the Pandemic - A World In Crisis," Colonel Herath addressed global challenges such as war, unemployment, supply chain disruptions, and the threats posed by Artificial Intelligence. He highlighted that around 300 million jobs are estimated to be lost due to Artificial Intelligence.
The conference aimed to broaden academic perspectives on the current world disorder and its impact on South Asian countries. Experts from various South Asian nations discussed navigating through challenges, including the ongoing wars between Russia and Ukraine, as well as Israel and the terrorist group, Hamas. Colonel Herath emphasized geopolitical tensions arising from crises in the Middle East, the Quad, China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Indo-Pacific affairs, Taiwan, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the climate crisis.
Eminent scholars, including Major General Dipankar Banerjee from India, Mallika Joseph (senior fellow at Women in Security, Conflict Management, and Peace), Avadesh Mathur of India Foundation, Shambhu Ram Simkhada (former Ambassador of Nepal to Switzerland), and Geeta Madhavan of India, also shared their views during the conference. Colonel Herath, in addition to his role at INSS, is an expert in International Relations and serves as the Director of Media and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defence.
